What is Shea Butter?

Shea Butter is produced from the Shea Nut Tree. The Shea Tree grows in the wooded savannahs of several countries in West Africa including Burkina Faso, Mali and Ghana. The tree itself is very stout and can grow in height up to about 20 meters, having a trunk of about one meter in diameter. It's fruit are berries the size of large plums and produces the first of these fruits after approximately twenty years. Full maturation and production (fruit yield) can be realized after about forty to fifty years. The (pericarp) or inner walls of the Shea nut are quite edible. One tree can produce up to twenty kilograms of fruit.

Shea Butter is exceptionally rich in vegetable fatty acid triglycerides (such as oleic and stearic). it also has a high concentration of fatty acids (phytosterol and unsaponifiables) which when used on a regular basis has the tendency to stimulate the skin's natural renewal process.

Traditional Uses

Karite tree, also known as Galam, Shea or Butyrospermum Parkii is considered sacred by many tribes in Western and Central Africa, where it grows. It is often called a Tree of Life

Collecting the fallen Shea Nuts from beneath the tree is generally the responsibility of the women and children. The Shea Tree historically has earned the right to be protected by the indigenous ethnic groups because it is an important source of edible vegetable fat and a wide variety of other useful things, such as: bark, the roots, latex and leaves.

Shea Butter is also used for cooking. Shea Butter can be used to preserve and protect drum heads from drying and cracking as a result of exposure to the sun and moisture. By sparingly applying Shea Butter directly to the palms of the hands and playing adds enough oil to the drum to effectively waterproof the fibers in the drum head.
